I don’t know about you, but my house often feels like a beautiful, chaotic whirlwind. Between the laundry piles that seem to grow when I’m not looking, the ping of phone notifications, and the general "to-do" list humming in the back of my brain, finding a moment of peace can feel like a tall order. I’ve spent many mornings trying to pray while sitting at the kitchen table, only to end up staring at a crumb I missed or mentally adding "buy milk" to my grocery list.
Can you relate? I think we all hit a point where we realize our souls are just… tired. We need a place to exhale. We need a place where the noise of the world fades out and the voice of the Lord becomes clearer. This is what I like to call "Rest for the Soul."
Over the last few months, I’ve been on a mission to create a prayer sanctuary right in the middle of my messy life. I used to think I needed a spare room or a Pinterest-perfect sunroom to have a "real" prayer space. Spoiler alert: I don’t have either of those things! But what I did find is that with a few intentional steps, you can turn any tiny corner of your home into a sacred refuge.
If you’re craving that same sense of peace, I want to invite you to join me. Let’s walk through five simple steps to create your own home prayer sanctuary.
Step 1: Find Your Nook (Even if it’s Small!)
When I first started thinking about a prayer space, I felt discouraged because my house isn’t huge. I kept thinking, “Where am I supposed to put this?” But here is the secret: God doesn't need a cathedral to meet with you. He just needs a dedicated space where you can show up.
Maybe for you, it’s a specific chair in the living room, a corner of your bedroom, or even a cleared-out closet (I’ve seen some amazing "war rooms" in closets!). I personally chose a small spot by my bedroom window. I love the natural light in the morning, and it feels tucked away from the main traffic of the house.
The goal is to find a spot that feels private. If you have kids or a busy household, maybe your "sanctuary" is only a sanctuary at 6:00 AM before everyone else wakes up. That’s okay! The physical location matters less than the intention behind it.

Step 2: Clear the Physical and Mental Clutter
I have always found it hard to focus when I’m surrounded by stuff. If I’m trying to meditate on scripture but there’s a stack of bills and a stray sock next to me, my brain immediately goes into "task mode."
To create a space for rest, we have to clear the decks. This doesn't mean you need to renovate your house! It just means that in your chosen nook, you remove the distractions. I spent ten minutes clearing off the small side table next to my chair. I took away the old magazines and the random hair ties.
When that physical space is clear, it’s like my brain gets permission to stop scanning for chores. It’s a physical signal that says, "We aren't working right now. We are resting." If you find it hard to disconnect, try leaving your phone in a different room entirely. I’ve started doing this, and let me tell you, the silence is beautiful.
Step 3: Establish a Focal Point
Once the clutter is gone, it helps to have something beautiful or meaningful to look at. In a church, we have the altar or a large cross to draw our eyes toward the divine. In your home sanctuary, a small focal point can do the same thing.
I love using something that catches the light or reminds me of a specific promise. I’ve found that suncatchers are a wonderful addition. When the sun hits them and scatters little bits of light across the wall, it reminds me of how God’s grace reaches into every dark corner of my life.
You might also choose a favorite verse or a piece of art. I keep a small graphic nearby that reminds me to breathe and trust Him when I’m feeling anxious. It’s a simple visual cue that helps me reset my heart.

Step 4: Gather Your Soul-Care Tools
Now that you have your spot and your focal point, let's talk about what goes in the space. I like to keep everything I need within arm's reach so I don’t have to get up once I’ve settled in.
Here is what’s in my little "prayer kit":
- My Bible: Of course!
- A Journal: I love writing out my prayers because it keeps my mind from wandering. I’ve been using the Jesus Heals Spiral Notebook lately. There’s something about the "Jesus Heals" reminder on the cover that makes me feel safe to share my heart.
- A Warm Drink: I’m a firm believer that tea or coffee is a spiritual gift. I usually have mine in my Jesus Heals Travel Mug so it stays warm while I’m deep in study.
- Reflection Cards: Sometimes I don't know where to start. Having some Fruit of the Spirit watercolor reflection cards is so helpful. I'll just pull one: like "Peace" or "Patience": and let that be my focus for the day.

If you're looking for a deeper dive, the Girl Go Read Your Bible notebook is also a great companion for those longer sessions where you really want to dig into the Word.
Step 5: Engage Your Senses with the 'Joy Candle'
This is my favorite step! To really create a sanctuary, we want to engage all our senses. When we smell something specific or hear soft music, our bodies actually start to relax. It’s a physiological response that aids our spiritual practice.
In my space, I always light a candle. It signals the beginning of my "God time." I’ve been absolutely loving our Joy Candle from the Fruit of the Spirit collection. It has these incredible notes of cherry and sandalwood. The cherry is bright and cheerful (hence the "Joy"!), and the sandalwood adds this warm, grounding earthiness that makes the whole room feel cozy.
You can find it and the rest of the scents in our Fruit of the Spirit candle collection. There is something so symbolic about lighting a candle; it’s a reminder that Jesus is the light of the world, even in our darkest or most stressful moments. As the scent of cherry and sandalwood fills the air, I can feel the tension leaving my shoulders. It’s a literal "Rest for the Soul."

Making it a Habit
I’ll be honest with you: having a beautiful space doesn’t mean I use it perfectly every day. There are still mornings when I sleep through my alarm or when a kid wakes up early and finds me there. But having the space ready makes it so much easier to return to.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t feel like you have to do all five steps today. Maybe today you just find the chair. Tomorrow, you clear the clutter. By next week, you might be lighting your Joy candle and opening your Bible.
The goal isn't perfection; it’s connection. God is already there, waiting for you in that quiet corner. He’s not looking for a fancy setup; He’s just looking for you.
I’d love to hear from you! Do you have a favorite spot in your home where you feel closest to God? Or maybe you’re planning to set one up this weekend? Leave a comment and let me know. We’re in this together, seeking that rest that only He can provide.
