"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." – Isaiah 43:19

I have always found the start of a new year both exciting and overwhelming. Maybe you feel the same way? There's something beautiful about fresh beginnings, but I'll be honest, I've struggled with setting goals that actually align with God's heart instead of just my own ambitious plans.

That's why I've fallen in love with prayer journaling for vision setting. It's different from those vision boards we see everywhere on social media. When I approach my journal with prayer first, I'm essentially saying, "God, here's my heart. Search it, align it, lead it," rather than just focusing on what I want to manifest for myself.

If you're ready to invite God into your vision for 2026, I've put together some prompts that have transformed how I approach the new year. These aren't just random questions, they're designed to help you discover what God might be doing in your life as He makes "a way in the wilderness."

Why Prayer Journaling Changes Everything

I have always found it hard to separate my wants from God's will when I'm planning for the future. Maybe you've experienced this too? We get caught up in what looks good on paper or what everyone else seems to be pursuing, and we forget to actually ask God what He's preparing for us.

Prayer journaling creates space for that conversation. When I write with my Bible open and my heart surrendered, something beautiful happens. Instead of just venting my thoughts onto paper (though that has its place!), I'm creating a dynamic dialogue with the One who knows my future better than I do.

Research shows that journaling benefits our mental health by helping us process emotions and lower stress. But when we add prayer to the mix, we're doing something even more powerful, we're aligning our minds and hearts with God's perspective.

Getting Started: Preparing Your Heart

Before you dive into these prompts, I want to encourage you to begin differently than you might with other goal-setting exercises. Here's what I've learned to do:

Start with surrender. I always begin by asking God to search my heart and show me any areas where I'm holding too tightly to my own plans. Sometimes the most beautiful visions come when we're willing to let go of what we thought we wanted.

Open your Bible to Isaiah 43:19. Read it slowly. Ask God to show you what "new thing" He might want to do in your life this year. Maybe it's something you can't even imagine yet.

Pray before you write. I like to say something simple like, "God, I invite You into this time. Show me Your heart for my life. Help me see beyond my own limitations."

Reflecting on God's Faithfulness in 2025

Before we look ahead, let's look back with gratitude. I have found that recognizing God's faithfulness in the past year helps me trust Him with the future.

Where did you see God's hand in the messy parts of 2025? Sometimes His faithfulness shows up most clearly in the places we didn't expect. Write about a time when something difficult actually led to something beautiful.

What "no" from God turned out to be a blessing? I know this can be hard to identify at first, but I've always found that God's closed doors protect us from paths that would ultimately harm us. Thank Him for His wisdom in redirecting your steps.

Who strengthened your faith this year? Write their name down and pray a specific blessing over their life. Ask God to show you how to encourage them in return.

What spiritual habit grew stronger in your life? Maybe you started reading your Bible more consistently, or perhaps you learned to pray throughout your day. Celebrate what God has already accomplished in you.

Vision and Purpose Prompts for 2026

Now let's turn our attention to what God might be preparing for you in the year ahead. I approach these prompts with curiosity rather than pressure: there's no rush to have all the answers immediately.

Which Fruit of the Spirit do you want to be known for by December 2026? Choose one: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control. Ask God to give you opportunities to practice it this year. I like to write down what growing in this area might look like in my daily life.

What's the "big scary dream" you've been too nervous to pray for? Put it on paper today. I have always found that the dreams that scare us a little are often the ones God plants in our hearts to stretch our faith. What would you attempt if you knew God was leading you?

How is God calling you to impact others beyond yourself? Maybe you've been feeling a nudge to volunteer somewhere, mentor someone, or use your gifts to serve. Write about how you sense God wanting to use you to bless others.

What does generous living look like for you in 2026? This isn't just about money: though that might be part of it. Ask God to give you eyes to see needs others might miss. How can you be generous with your time, talents, and attention?

What spiritual habit do you want to establish in your home this year? Maybe it's family devotions, prayer before meals, or playing worship music throughout the day. Ask God to show you one small way to make your home more Christ-centered.

Spiritual Growth and Character Development

These prompts focus on who you're becoming, not just what you're doing. I've learned that God cares more about our character than our accomplishments.

What temptation trips you up most often? Write it down honestly, then find a Bible verse to "fire back" with when temptation comes. I like to memorize verses that speak directly to my areas of weakness.

How have your words been building others up or tearing them down lately? This one always convicts me. Ask God for a heart that speaks life and encouragement. What would change if you became known for the way you use your words?

Where do you need to find true, soul-deep rest? Our culture is obsessed with hustle, but God calls us to rhythm. What would rest look like for you this year? How can you create space for your soul to be restored?

What are you waiting on God for right now? If you're in a season of waiting, ask God for peace to trust His timing. Sometimes the waiting is where our faith grows strongest.

Practical Daily Life Prompts

These prompts help you think about how your vision translates into everyday moments.

What does loving your family well look like this year? Be specific. Maybe it's putting your phone down during dinner or planning special one-on-one time with each person. Ask God to show you practical ways to demonstrate love.

How can you steward your resources better? This includes time, money, energy, and talents. Where might God be calling you to be more intentional or generous?

What boundaries do you need to establish to protect what matters most? I have always found this challenging, but boundaries aren't selfish: they're necessary for sustained ministry to others.

How do you want to grow in your relationship with God? Maybe it's through deeper Bible study, more consistent prayer, or learning to hear His voice more clearly. What's one step you can take this month?

Making It Sustainable

I know from experience that good intentions don't automatically lead to lasting change. Here are some practical ways I've learned to make prayer journaling a sustainable practice:

Start small. Maybe commit to journaling through just one prompt each Saturday morning. You can always add more later, but it's better to be consistent with less than to burn out with too much.

Keep it simple. You don't need a fancy journal or perfect handwriting. I've used everything from a simple spiral notebook to digital notes on my phone. The important thing is consistency, not perfection.

Include answered prayers. I always leave space to record how God responds to my prayers throughout the year. It builds my faith to see His faithfulness written down in my own handwriting.

Share with a friend. If you want to join me in this journey, consider finding someone who might want to work through these prompts too. There's something powerful about praying for each other's visions.

Remember, God is already at work in your life. He's making a way where there seems to be no way, just like He promised in Isaiah 43:19. Your job isn't to figure everything out perfectly: it's to stay close to Him and trust Him with the details.

What new thing might God be preparing to do in your life this year? I'm excited to find out alongside you.
